Project Goals

The Atlantic Beach South Carolina Gullah Geechee Organization came to us with a very old, outdated website that offered no real functionality and, ironically for a heritage preservation organization, told visitors nothing about who they were or the history they exist to protect. The organization needed a digital home that could clearly communicate its mission, educate the public on the legacy of Atlantic Beach — known as “The Black Pearl” of the Atlantic — and give community members a way to actively participate in preserving that history. They also needed practical tools to support their work, including a way to accept donations, field tour requests, and grow their audience.

Our Solution

We designed and built a fully functional, user-friendly WordPress website that puts the organization’s mission and story front and center. The new site walks visitors through the history of Atlantic Beach — a cherished four-block stretch of South Carolina coastline where Black families found the freedom to build their own institutions, businesses, and joy — through dedicated history and stories pages enriched with archival photos and video. We built a custom “Share Your Story” submission experience that invites community members to contribute their own memories, photos, and story titles, complete with a media-sharing permission consent, turning the website into a living archive. To support operations, we integrated a fee-free Zeffy donation platform, a categorized contact form covering general inquiries, tour requests, volunteer interest, and speaking requests, and a newsletter signup to keep the community engaged.
